The Nuka Cola themed T-51b power helmet had to be recalled from GameStop retailers

In the continuing tale that people don’t think can get worse yet somehow defies those expectations continuously of Fallout 76, reports have come in that say that power armor helmets that were sold at GameStop to promote Fallout 76 have had to be recalled from retailers. The recall order was discovered on the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission’s website and the recall is stated to be due to alleged dangerous levels of mold being found within the helmets. According to reports, there have been no cases in which the helmet has caused any harm as a result of this mold. As displayed on the Consumer Product Safety Commission website, it is stated:

Mold can be present on the fabric insert inside the helmet, posing a risk of respiratory or other infections in individuals with compromised immune systems, damaged lungs or an allergy to mold.

For those that are currently in ownership of the helmet, GameStop are offering refunds to those that contact customer support where return instructions are being issued, but reportedly GameStop is also attempting to contact any known purchasers of these helmets as well. The CPSC report that there are around 20,000 helmets out there that are exposed towards the mold issue. However, according to Ben Bayliss of Dual Shockers, Chronicle LLC (the manufacturers of the helmet) had stated that only 32 units of the helmet were bought, sold and shipped to consumers.

Now, just to specifically specify as there seems to be some confusion in some other articles online, the actual items that have been recalled aren’t the power helmets that were included in the power armor edition of the game, but instead it is just the Nuke Cola themed power helmets that were sold exclusively at GameStop.

The helmet included in the power armor edition is unaffected despite original reports.

In a press statement, Bethesda, Fallout 76’s developers, and publishers commented saying:

The helmets that are being recalled are not from our Fallout 76 Power Armor Edition, but are instead a different line of helmets sold exclusively by GameStop. The Fallout 76 Power Armor Edition helmets are unaffected. Consumers should visit the product recall page for instructions if they have purchased the GameStop helmet.”

If you are in ownership of this product, please contact GameStop at 800–883–8895 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, email at ProductSafety@gamestop.com with “Product Recall” as the email subject, or online at www.GameStop.com and click on the “Recall” link at the top of the page for more information.

It’s at this point where I’m not even really surprised when something like this comes out about Fallout 76. Fallout 76 has been a tale of bad press after bad press, bad business move to bad business move, outrage after outrage. I’d be more surprised if the game really did anything right. This one however I feel is a little bit more minor as I can somewhat be of the understanding how something like this can be overlooked, however some knowledge about polyesters etc. that the helmets were made of would make some of the problems a bit more noticeable if they’ve started to get moldy just over a year after they were sold to the consumers. But regardless, it’s another bad day for Bethesda, and another bad day for Fallout 76.
